This idea of coaching and the connection to people leadership is a really popular topic right now. It’s popular because it can connect your employees to your work culture and transform the way they work. But how can we coach people with success in mind? Coaching is far more than just feedback and criticism about performance. We are discussing what good coaching looks like and how it can help your employees, and you, have a successful career.

1. Know the difference between coaching and critique. When we are trying to coach others, it is easy to slip into a critique of their performance. It is important to be encouraging when giving feedback and show them how much they have progressed.

2. Be aware of what hinders the people you are coaching. The saying goes, there are no bad students only bad teachers. While that may not be true all of the time, we need to pay attention to what may be hindering the people we are coaching. Often times, they are missing a key ingredient to improve or receive the advice they are given. 3. Ask for feedback for yourself. Part of becoming a good leader is having received coaching and feedback. If you don’t have a coach, or even if you do, ask for feedback from others. Asking for feedback is a good way to set up a culture of coaching and improvement. The trick is that you need to actually want feedback and do something about it once you have received it!
